Graduate Update – July 2015

Our successful Graduate Kerry Benson has been extremely busy since her first Successful Graduate story, so we thought you would enjoy reading an update. Kerry has continued to build her business really well, she was nominated for a Scratch Star award and has generally been loving her life as a busy nail technician.

Here is Kerry’s story as to what ‘Happiness is being a nail tech!’ means to her:

Well ‘happiness is being a nail tech’, for me anyway.

I would never have discovered my hidden talents without Essential Nails Courses, they have got me where I am today. My self-motivation and thirst for knowledge and skill meant that I improved at an incredible rate and I even surprised myself.

I thrive on the job satisfaction and sense of achievement every time I complete a set of nails. I get so excited when I create artwork in a style or technique that I’ve not used before. I haven’t ever been happier at work!

I am a sociable person and love the discussions with my clients while I work and love to see them happy with the nails I have created for them.
I love that every day is different, different faces and different nails. I fill my diary with nail appointments, training dates and beauty shows held around the country. Networking on social media and making long distance friends with people who I meet up with at these events.

As a nail tech you can never stop learning, you can always improve your skills and discover new products. I have the flexibility to work my own hours around my own commitments. Just after my career move into nails my marriage broke down and I became a single parent. Having nail skills and this career has ensured that even in this difficult situation, I can be the best parent I can possibly be to my two amazing children. My commitments as a mother obviously comes first, but happiness is being a nail tech because, my perfect job, fits perfectly around my family.

Now that I’m settled, I want to use my drive and ambition to simply become the best nail tech that I can be.

In our recent nail art competition “Flowers in Bloom”, graduate Kerry Benson came first in both the Acrylic and Gel graduate categories and her Acrylic entry received over 500 likes on our Facebook page. We are so impressed with Kerry’s work, her creations are simply stunning.

Please take a moment to read Kerry’s inspirational story about her journey into the world of nails.

My name is Kerry Benson, I am 34 and have two children. I was in the Royal Air Force for a few years but decided to leave to marry my husband who is also RAF and we then had children together.

It’s a very difficult life as you move to a new area every 2 or 3 years. I was fed up with always taking jobs that I didn’t enjoy just to earn some money while my children were in nursery.

After leaving the RAF I didn’t really have a career option in civilian street but I had left with good hand skills after doing some precision engineering in metal work.

I had always loved having my nails done when I was on leave but once I had left the RAF I started doing my own nails to save money. I came across Essential nails on the Internet and finally decided I was going to take the plunge and learn a new trade. My husband bought me my first course for Christmas and in January I cracked on with it.

I knew this could move with me every time we’d pack up again to follow my husband round. I started off with the acrylic overlay course, followed by the maintenance all within the space of three months, working every hour I could around my other commitments. I had always had acrylic myself as I have horses and gel was never strong enough to withstand the horrors I put my hands through on a daily basis. I also loved how versatile it is for 3D artwork. I finally passed the Las Vegas acrylic master tech, taught by Kirsty Meakin in only April 2012. I was made up with how simple it is if your patient and use the correct method.

I failed my art GCSE at school with a big fat F, and look at me now, a nail artist!!! Eeek! (I still have to pinch myself sometimes) I went on to do the gel and then the airbrushing. In April I moved overseas to Cyprus with my husband and have a thriving business. My clientele made up of HM Forces families. I don’t have enough hours in the day and think that one day I would love to go on to be an educator and help others. For now though, we are packing up again and moving to the Portsmouth area, but I now have my own business to take with me thanks to EN. I love their courses and in two years I’ve become a professional in my field and have a very successful business.

I love their products and the support you get even after qualifying. I’m proud to be part of the EN family, they are so friendly and fun, and I love showing off my work in their competitions and encouraging others who are just starting their journey.

If you are thinking of doing a course, I would highly recommend them.
